A psycho-educational assessment may be helpful if your child is experiencing difficulties with learning, attention, concentration, reading, writing, mathematics, academic performance, emotional well-being, behaviour, or school adjustment. Assessments can also be useful when there are concerns regarding giftedness, school readiness, subject selection, or examination accommodations.
A psycho-educational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of a learner's cognitive, academic, emotional and behavioural functioning. The assessment aims to identify strengths, areas of difficulty, and the factors that may be impacting learning and development. Recommendations are provided to support the learner at home and at school.
How long does an assessment take?
The length of an assessment depends on the reason for referral and the individual's age and needs. Most psycho-educational assessments are completed over one or two assessment sessions, followed by a detailed written report and feedback session.
Educational Psychologists are trained to assess attention, executive functioning and behavioural difficulties. When sufficient evidence is present, ADHD may be identified during the assessment process. Recommendations regarding further medical consultation and treatment options may also be made where appropriate.
